Concert!

There was a concert. We survived. Actually, it went quite well. Somehow I didn't screw up my part in the first skit, and for the most part I sang correct things, though I made a few mistakes which hopefully no one noticed.

Also, the Honorable Menschen are really good. They opened for us. They probably have a better sound than us, considering their blend is a lot better than ours. But we have crazy difficult arrangements of doom. And usually there are bunch of different rhythms going on at once, so it makes blending a bit harder. We don't have that normal a cappella group sound because the stuff we sing isn't arranged that way. (Exceptions to this might be "Wake me up" "Yonatan Shapira" and "New Soul".)

I think we sounded better this semester than we did last semester, since we had a lot more practice. The skits were better last semester, since this semester we got a late start on that. But this semester I got to sing Carmen Sandiego!

Also, we pretty much had a full house. (The seats we sat in during the Menschen's performance were open once we started performing, but there were people standing in the back.) This did not happen last semester. Part of that might have been all the people coming to see the Menschen, but there were also lots of people there to see us. I contributed 5.5 people to the audience (the .5 would be [livejournal.com profile] youth_thinker, who was there for both me and GT.) Maybe a bit more because I don't know if N would have told his family about the Menschen performing had I not mentioned at D&D that we were both going to be in the concert. So I'll count half of them, bringing the total to 7.5 people. Yay audience!

Ok, not so ancient, since this was from the late 19th century. I was looking at Japan Day by Day doing research for my Japan paper, and found this:

An interesting game is played with the hand. Kneeling opposite each other the right hand of each player is flung out at the same instant. The hands must be in one of three positions: the palm open, representing paper; the index and middle finger open, suggesting a pair of scissors; the hand clenched, representing a stone. Now the paper can cover or conceal the stone; the stone can smash the scissors; and the scissors can cut the paper. Counting "one, two, three," the players fling their arms at the same time, and on the third stroke the hand must come in one of the three positions mentioned above. If your opponent comes out scissors and you come out paper, he has beaten you once, for scissors can cut the paper; if, however, you had come out stone, the stone can smash the scissors, and you have won. Either one winning three times in succession has won the game. You will notice little children when called upon to do an errand resort to this game, doing it once only, to see who shall go; drawing lots, in fact.

It's rock, paper, scissors! It came from Japan! Isn't that awesome?

I got myself a dreamwidth account, which I think for now will just serve the purpose of existing so I can read the dreamwidth accounts of people who are leaving LJ. So for now I'm still posting here as normal. My account name there is theyellowhobbit if you want to add me.

Sarah Palin got me an A!

(If anyone wants to read the paper for fun, let me know.)

I won the Divinity School ball again. This time it was dress + having hKC with me to dance with. I should keep on winning balls, because it is fun.

*Edit* Actually there were 2 balls yesterday that I won. The first was in our Dogs in the Vineyard game, where the mayor had a ball to honor us, but there was all this sketchy stuff going on that we had to investigate. My character had a Dress of Awesome worth 2d6. All the men wanted to dance with her. So thus I won that ball as well.

Help?

Does anyone know Chicago Manual of Style citations? I'm looking on the internets and having trouble formatting my source, because they don't seem to have anything for speeches available online, and 3 of my sources are speeches.

Winthrop's Model of Christian Charity:
http://history.hanover.edu/texts/winthmod.html
Reagan's Farewell address:
http://www.ronaldreagan.com/sp_21.html
and the 2008 Vice Presidential Debate (of doom):
http://elections.nytimes.com/2008/president/debates/transcripts/vice-presidential-debate.html

And I got points off for not having my footnotes in Chicago last time, so they actually need to be correct.

If someone could turn them into Chicago citations for me, I would be infinitely grateful. This shouldn't be as hard as it is, and I'm frustrated to the point of tears right now (though that probably has to do with stress in general, too) and I want this paper to be perfect to make up for the sadness that was my previous paper.

(The paper is due at noon tomorrow, but I'd like to hand it in before then, like by 8:30 AM, since I'm running errands and whatnot. So I need help tonight.)

Edit: [livejournal.com profile] eponis saved the day. But does anyone want to read a 2000 word paper on the epic fail of Sarah Palin in the VP debate with the City on a Hill thing?

How much of an academic dork would I be to have a footnote on the title of my paper?

Chad Gadya!

Those of you who are at/went to Penn probably know (or at least know of) the Penn Chad Gayda. Unlike the standard tune for chad gadya that most people sing, this one has one person who sings the verses and everyone else sings underneath "chad gadya, chad gadya" with the result that it sounds like a "Navajo rain dance" (saith an alum, not my own terminology, though she's right). I like it a lot better than the "normal" tune.

But not only do we sing it on Passover as normal people would, we also sing it on Simchat Torah, and in the good ol' days at tisches (festive gatherings on Shabbat night with food, song, and usually alcohol) as well. Though whether or not we sang it was up to the person who sang the verses, the person with "chad gadya smicha" (smicha being the tradition of rabbinic ordination, except in this case it's not rabbinic, but still a tradition passed down from person to person.) Like Orthodox rabbis, the person with chad gadya smicha is always male. Thus I never got chad gadya smicha.

However, when not at Penn, one does not need the official chad gadya person in order to sing it. Except that not many people outside of Penn know the tune.

At Harvard we do not sing chad gadya on Simchat Torah (though I did get SCM to start doing maarei cohen) and on passover we sing it, but with the normal, boring tune. So I haven't sung it in 2 years. I really miss it, considering it is one of my favorite songs.

So for the 2nd seder I'm going to N's house. I asked if we could use the Penn tune for Chad Gadya and he said that we probably weren't going to sing it because his family normally didn't. But then a few days ago he said that I could do it as my "drash" (mini-sermon/lesson on something in the Torah or in this case in the Hagaddah). So now I will teach everyone the very awesome Penn Chad Gadya.

Also, I just realized that I had been planning on going to see Joss Whedon when he came to Harvard. Except now I'm hosting Friday night dinner at the time when Joss will be speaking. Gah! Why do I do these things to myself?

Last night I dreamed that it was the day of Techiya's spring concert, except for some reason the concert was in April and not in May. When I went over to MIT (by cab, since there were random people who stayed at my house and were also going to MIT, and were traveling by cab)1 I had no clue what building the concert was in. So I got out at a random building and then somehow found my way to the concert room.

While waiting for the rest of Techiya to arrive, I was hanging out with some people in Honorable Menschen, the a cappella group that was going to cover for us in the concert (this is true IRL, too). The people who I hung out with were real-life people who are actually in the Menschen (including you, [livejournal.com profile] chanaleh). One of them was RS, who I told about how I was excited that the Menschen were covering for us, and that therefore they'd be watching our concert, except it wasn't until I said that that I realized "oh, wait, you are in the Menschen!" Considering he's the one who first told me of the group's existence, that was a silly thing for me to forget, even in a dream. (In the dream I also knew he was the one who had told me of the group's existence.)

Some of Techiya arrived. We were in normal clothes and not concert attire, and we had no skits. Or props. Or song order. Or anything. And we knew just as much of the music as we currently know now, which is not the full repertoire that we will know by the real concert. Also, for some reason instead of rehearsing every night (except Shabbat) of tech week, we had only been rehearsing once a week for the past couple of weeks.

So naturally we started to panic. The audience was sitting in the room already (even though in real life we give ourselves a few hours to do a run-through and stuff) and we were running back and forth across the stage, frantically trying to set things up. Someone said to the audience, "think of this as a dress rehearsal."

Then I woke up. I am very glad our concert is on May 10 and not some time in April. And we'll have time to learn our music. And write a script for the skits. And have our concert attire.

I'm debating whether or not I should tell the rest of Techiya (or the rest of Techiya not on LJ) about my crazy dream. It might amuse them, or they might be weirded out that I had this dream.

1I live about a 15 minute walk to MIT, so taking a cab there is kind of ridiculous in real life.

Last night I dreamed that I had accidentally signed up to read Torah at Tremont Street on Saturday morning, despite the fact that I had D&D at my place in the afternoon. It was Friday and I was considering whether or not I should try to get out of it, but realized it was probably too late for them to find someone else. I woke up before I actually read Torah in the dream. And it took me a while to realize that no, I had not actually signed up to read Torah at Tremont Street.

I'm finally on spring break. My last class was Thursday afternoon, but I had a paper due Friday for my God class. It was due at 4:45 PM, but I finished it and sent it in around 6:30 (with candlelighting being at 6:38). He said that late work would be penalized. I'm hoping that 2 hours lateness won't incur too much of a penalty. Also, my paper wasn't the greatest. I have to keep reminding myself that I'm taking this class pass/fail. As long as I pass, I'm fine. I'm pretty confident that I wrote something that was at least B quality. So while it is not as good as it could have been, it was not terrible, and hopefully I will be okay.

[livejournal.com profile] sparkleycricket was here visiting from Thursday afternoon to today. She was originally going to go home tomorrow, but then personal things came up. I'm sad I didn't get to see her for longer, but I'm glad that I did get to see her.

And she did get to be in my Saturday campaign for a session, and I think I might have succeeded in getting her into D&D. Don't be surprised if you get a dice bag (with dice) in the mail knit from handspun yarn from the hair of Prawn Salad. :-p (I don't think I would actually make Prawn Salad yarn. She doesn't particularly like being brushed.)

So my break will include working, applying to jobs (mostly writing cover letters, which take forever), going clothes shopping with Grandma (who wants to buy me clothes. Normally I buy my own clothes, and don't buy them so often. However, if I'm applying to jobs I need nice, professional clothing, and I don't really have the money for that. And it's been forever since I've bought new clothes. Also, my pants are getting too big, and I want pants that fit.), and hopefully some spinning and knitting as well. And I might get together with dsKC assuming he's not dead. And I'll probably see [livejournal.com profile] desh next weekend since he's visiting.

This break will not be very relaxing, especially since the job thing is rather scary. This is the first time I've tried to find full-time employment. And I also have to do the project proposal for my Japan class, which was actually due on the 5th. I've just been so behind in everything, and have a ridiculous amount of catching up to do. But if I apply to a bunch of jobs, maybe I'll start to feel better about the future.

How ridiculous would it be to draw xkcd style stick figures of the characters in the Purim story on my mishloach manot?1 Can I draw sad looking eunuchs? (I'm not sure whether or not there will be kids at the morning reading at TBS, which is where most of these will be given out.) What about Haman hanging from the tree? Haman would be Black Hat Guy, though he might have a triangular hat as opposed to the normal black hat of Black Hat Guy. I'm not sure how many people will get the xkcd humor. So I guess the vast majority of the mishloach manot will be boring and have flowers and stuff. (Though I do have a special one for special persons who may or may not be reading this right now. You'll like it.)

Thoughts?

1 Bags of cookies and candies and stuff that you give out on Purim. There's a specific mitzvah to do it, and you're supposed to include foods that are ready to eat and also different kinds that have different blessings you would say before eating them. (I'm not getting into the whole blessings before food thing. If you're that interested, Wikipedia probably will tell you everything you need to know.)

I was wearing my Jayne hat today, since right now it's the warmest hat I have (my llama one is in the hands of someone from Techiya, I forget who, and i keep on forgetting to ask. I should send an e-mail so that they can bring it to the next rehearsal). As I was waiting for the bus, a woman comes up to me and says "That is very cunning!" Had I not been on the cell phone at the time I would have thanked her, but I did smile at her. It made my day.

There have been a few times where I've noticed others in Jayne hats around Cambridge, but I've never had the guts to go up and compliment them on it. Also, it hasn't yet happened that I've been wearing my Jayne hat when I've spotted these other people in their hats. But I think now I'm going to make a point of complimenting people in Jayne hats. I mean, what can be cooler than a Jayne hat?

A man walks down a street in a hat like that, and people know he's not afraid of anything.

*That's a quote from the episode of Firefly in which this hat was featured. I would be just as happy with someone saying that to me as if they said it was cunning or shiny, since in any case they get the reference and that's what counts. Though I would not tell a random person that the hat makes him/her look like an idiot (especially because what if it was given to them from someone who knew Firefly, but the wear themselves didn't and thus would think I was insulting them?) and would instead say "ooh, a Jayne hat!" or "your hat is cunning/shiny!"

Last night I was hoping professor Nasrallah would give us a snow day. I had e-mailed her about something else and was considering asking for a snow day, but forgot and was not going to send her a second e-mail. But then she cancelled class.

Actually, it wasn't really her so much as the whole Div School cancelled morning classes. The library also will not open until noon.

Unfortunately, I still have to be on campus eventually. I have an appointment at 1, work from 2-3:45, and a massage appointment at 3:50. I also need to drop off my internship application at the Peabody, though theoretically that could be e-mailed.

But this did at least buy me time, and now I get a leisurely morning where I can knit. Or get caught up on work...
theyellowhobbit: (Default)
Anyone on the internets right now and want to quickly look at my cover letter for an internship at the Peabody museum that I'm applying to?

Yesterday my backpack seemed rather heavy. Running around doing a billion errands didn't help. But even without the extra running, the backpack seemed heavier than normal.

This morning I took out some yarn and needles, and my character sheet folder. Still the bag was heavy.

And as I'm getting ready for class, I realized why:

I still have my 2lbs of dice from gaming on Monday. 2lbs!!!!

Now I have to carry them around for the rest of the day but luckily I don't have too far to walk.

Tonight was Techiya song selection. While we were sitting around, I pulled out my laptop. I had copied and pasted the 2 chapters which have the quotes that I can use for my next paper. So AM was sitting next to me and asked what it was. And I said "Acts and Galatians." And then she was confused and I realized that she didn't know they were NT books. So I informed her of that. Apparently most Jews don't know the New Testament, which makes sense since I knew no NT until I got to divinity school. I forget these seemingly obvious things.

Also, one of the songs we voted on was Psalm 92. It got 6 votes. So the 6 was written next to it, and it became Psalm 926. "It's in the Apocrypha!" I said. I'm such a dork.

In other news, in my quest to be a self-sufficient RPGer, I've decided to do a 1-player campaign with NM, using the Dogs in the Vineyard system, which is actually easy to understand and is not filled with lots of scary numbers, and things like armor classes and base attack bonuses and grapple, and giant spell lists and DCs and whatnot. It means it's something I have a chance of actually being able to GM. I still need to think of things like Plot, but the awesome thing about the system is that the players play a huge part in the storytelling. Also I like the way confrontation works, and how it's the same procedure for talking as it is for shooting people, except that when guns come in the stakes are higher, and more Bad Stuff can happen if you take too much fallout.

If dsKC agrees to it, I'm going to attempt a 1-shot session for him on Thursday. Of course, this also requires Plot. Maybe I can give him the same plot as NM, except with NM I'm actually asking her to think of what kind of setting she wants to be in, since I'm probably not using the Mormon Paladin West That Never Was setting that the game was originally designed for.

So we'll see whether or not I'm a good GM. It's a skill I'd like to have, so that if I end up in a place with people who are interested in playing RPGs but don't want to DM/GM, I could volunteer so that a campaign could actually happen.

Actually- question for the author/GM types: how do you build a good plot with interesting events for the characters to experience?
theyellowhobbit: (Default)
This is the weekend of gaming. JB started a Dogs in the Vineyard campaign that meets on Saturdays. Only we're doing it in a Cthulu Lovecraftian setting as opposed to being Mormon paladins in the West That Never Was. We created characters on Thursday night and had the first meeting today, and it is made of awesome. The system is different from d20 based ones, and makes a lot more sense, especially in terms of combat and stuff. I'm a fan.

Then tomorrow I'm doing character creation for N's monk campaign, but he also offered to run a solo session for me. So that will also be awesome.

And if that wasn't enough gaming, my/dsKC's campaign from the summer is finally meeting again on Monday. And we might have the entire group because I ran into JM on Friday night at Hillel (which was completely unexpected) and asked if he could exist on Monday and he said he might be able to, depending on how much work he got done between then and Monday.

So that's 3 different games that are meeting this weekend. dsKC's hardly ever exists, so this is probably not going to happen again any time in the near future, though N and JM's campaigns will both meet on a weekly basis, so I'm back to having active campaigns again. And back to them being campaigns that I look forward to all week, as opposed to my sad, sad, sad D&D campaign of doom. An analogy:

dsKC's campaign/N's campaign/JB's campaign:sad D&D campaign::Settlers of Catan:Civil War 2061.

Also, NM and I decided that in the year 2061 HRSFA has to have a reunion that involves a Civil War reenactment.
