I'm going insane right now, because Harvard Divinity mailed their decisions today, and they don't put them online, and I'm waiting to hear from them. Please let me come to your program. You know you need a knittingy archaeological hobbit to diversify the student body. Hobbits are a minority population...

I'm keeping the GIS class, because Dr. Tomlin said I could make up the assignments at my own pace, and I'm not as behind as I think I am, and the next few assignments will be mindless, and we have next week off. So I feel less stressed.

And I finally finished the beret, taking it in so it actually can fit a human head. And I gave it to Jenny today and she loves it. Black is her favorite color (not that black is a color...)

Yes, I know. Still no China pictures. I'll put them up when I have space on my computer and am not days behind in work. Ok?

Why is no one e-mailing me back?

I e-mailed Dr. Erickson yesterday morning about field schools of field schoolness [I want to sign up for whatever dig I'm going on soon, so I can have that settled]. No response.

I e-mailed Katie, my Environmental studies TA about my grade for that class, no response. [That was Sunday]

I e-mailed Leslie about doing costumes for Tea-tron. That was Sunday night. No response.

I e-mailed Rabbi Seif, who usually is good about checking his e-mail [maybe too good] about whether or not dad could play clarinet for the next 11 months [this would be the 3rd rabbinical opinion] and no answer.

Professor Fishman got back to me, but she only said that shes posting grades online by Jan 3rd. That doesn't help me now...

Teagan also got back to me with anth, as I've posted.

And I feel too guilty to e-mail Andrew about the exam if I still haven't sent Ruderman his paper. And by still haven't sent, I mean still haven't written...
theyellowhobbit: (Default)
So I'm falling behind on the reading for the paper. I spent some time photocopying some stuff for Shawn Zelig Aster [provider of small well-paying research jobs] in the Museum library, and 45 minutes in the post office on 40th street trying to mail these photocopies to Israel. And I spent too much time reading Tamora Pierce [obviously Liz's, or by proxy Josh's fault!]

I haven't written anything yet, I'm still on the 3rd chapter of 5 of Engendering Judaism, I have very few notes on the book [I only started now, so I have to go back in the end. I haven't even started reading Tamar Ross. The paper is due at 5pm Monday, so although I have no Sunday, I can wake up really early on Monday and pull an all-dayer in the library. Maybe I should bake a deli-roll to eat while I'm there. Though I have no meat...

I'm going to bed now, because if I don't, I never will, and then I'll be too tired to get stuff done tomorrrow.

Gah!

I can't even write a simple sentence on Rabbi Mike without needing a GINORMOUS footnote about what Reform, Conservative, and Orthodox Judaism all are. This isn't just an ethnography of a workplace, it's an ethnography of a freaking religion!!

You know that midterm that I had so much trouble writing? I got an A!
Meanwhile, I missed one of the corrections that [livejournal.com profile] jtersesk made, so it was there in blue. And she didn't look at the conclusion, since I wrote it afterwards, so I messed up there. To quote: "Geiger and Mendelssohn would look at Judaism as needing to change in order to integrate into the surround culture. "

I feel like an idiot for letting that slide, and for sure, Ruderman/Andrew [my TA] caught it, because it was underlined. Oh well, I still have that pretty A. Shiny!

*And I just edited this entry. Can't I write anything coherently?!?!?!
theyellowhobbit: (Default)
But I won't. If you want to hit your head against a wall several times, check out [livejournal.com profile] lopaanre's 2nd most recent entry. "25 unique LJ mistakes."

Actually, I should make up my own meme, considering I have a midterm to work on. I signed up for classes and did my anthropology homework [well the minimal amount of reading required to submit a questio to my TA]. I also edited 2 stories that we're reading in Pennumbra [Penn's scifi/fantasy writing group] today and printed those out. And went to CVS to put in a prescription that I should eventually pick up.

I have no words for NaNo today as of yet, despite having 2.5 hours with my computer while I was mashing. That's when I worked on my classes and e-mailed a bunch of professors [and by "a bunch" I mean 2].

If I don't want to work on the midterm and have nothing for NaNo, I should at least work on my Spirit & Law reading in the hour I have before Rabbi Leibtag's shiur tonight. I wonder if his shiur will sound like a Meira d'var torah...

Today I had a meeting with Janet Monge. Last night I had a dream about said meeting. I dreamed that she wasn't sure whether or not I could take her class, since I had to leave early for the first 2 weeks, since she'd rather give my spot to someone who didn't have to leave early. I also, for some reason, had to demonstrate that I could bike really quickly to Hillel.

Speaking of biking- I have a new talent- precision biking. "What is this?" you may ask. It involves my bike, the basket in the front of my bike, various large objects, and a coffee from Wawa. What you do is buy a coffee, put your large objects [such as an environmental studies book or a gym bag] in the basket, and then squeeze the coffee into the corner, with the large object holding it in place. Then you bike downhill to the anthropology museum. The object of precision biking is to get to the museum without spilling the coffee. A little bit on the lid is fine, but it can't go flying out. So far, out of 2 tries, I've succeeded both times.

So now the real meeting- she said she'd love to have me in her class, and it was fine if I had to leave a little early for the first few weeks. I also might be able to volunteer at the museum next semester, and she said if I was there for long periods of time, I could get access to the student lab to study in. Which might give me museum access.

Speaking of museum access, which Ariela will soon have, I could have used it today. After class I wandered about the exhibits, and I then tried to get back to the classroom part of the museum. I knew that if I crossed the deck on top of the cafe, I could get there. Unfortunately you need museum access for that. So I had to go down 2 flights of stairs and then up 2 different flights of stairs. I still haven't explored the entire museum. Maybe I can go again this shabbas [hint hint Josh and Liz]. And I won't wear injury-inducing shoes, considering I'm up to "Avidan M" in the Avidan game.

Wow. Almost 400 words, none of which are for my story.

And now back to actual work.

Yesterday I learned that Ilana Barach and [livejournal.com profile] cynara_linnaea are in my Anth 002 class. W00t. It's a rule that all residents or former residents of 309 must be in anthropology classes together. So Jackie should join this class.

I talked to Janet Monge, who got a haircut, and now her hair is short and it looks like mad professor hair since it sticks out everywhere, which is appropriate, considering she's crazy-ish. It turns out that some of my Jewish studies classes can double-count for anthrolpology, so I should be more than fine majoring. Whee!

Today's environmental studies class was ok. He was talking about hurricane Katrina, and how hurricanes build up and stuff like that. I have wireless internet in Towne, which means that I can check my e-mail during class. [Did I just type that out loud?]

My Modern Intellectual Jewish Thought class was cut short. The professor was sick, so the TA just gave us the syllabus and told us that recitations were cancelled, and he wants to consolidate them [70% of the class is senior citizens auditing, so I don't think they'd go to recitation.]

Which gave me a 2.5 hour break I had not anticipated. I went back to Hillel [I'm there now, with my wireless. Yay!] and sat with Adam Buchoff, who was eating lunch, and got him set up for the newsgroup. His laptop is spiffy. It has shiny lights on it. Shiny! [Of course, then he had to say that all girls are like magpies in regards to shiny things. I'd prefer to think it's a hobbit thing, since Hobbits are attracted to shiny things. Does that mean that hot guys are "shiny"?]

**Edit: I wanted to write about shiny things because I learned today that the clear stone in my nose ring casts a circular reflected light, which can be moved by turning my head. It's very amusing to play with. I can also see the ring from my right eye, so sometimes I stare at it, and realize I probably should be doing something else, like perhaps watching the road when I'm biking.**

So I still have an hour to kill. Whee.
At 4 I have a meeting with Hellerstein, who is once again back on campus.

And I have no class this Friday, which means optimum cooking time. Yosef is giving me a ride to shoprite tonight. w00t!

Oh man, Yesterday's Women and Religion was so embarrasing.

Kitten219: so i was in women and religion yesterday
Kitten219: and i corrected the teacher when she messed up something jewish
Kitten219: and she was like "i see you knitting all the time"
purplewoodchuck: lol
Kitten219: do you know this psychologist ___? [I don't remember his name]
Kitten219: i said no
Kitten219: she said he was freudian
Kitten219: i was like "uh-oh"
Kitten219: and so she told the story
Kitten219: once ____ was giving a lecture and the woman in the front seat was knitting
Kitten219: this irritated him, so he said something about it.
Kitten219: "miss, do you know what knitting is? it's another form of masterbation"
Kitten219: she replied "sir, when i knit, i knit, and when i masterbate, i masterbate"
Kitten219: i don't think i can knit in that class ever again

I had recitation that day, and was like "Ok. I'm gonna crochet. There's no Freudian interpretation of crocheting."

But yeah, I pretty much got ownzed. Though you'd think she would have said something a lot sooner if she had something against me knitting.

Sunday was spent studying in Van Pelt. I did a lot for social psychology, but not enough for abnormal. Hopefully I managed a B on that test.

At least now I'm finally done being stressed out. 5 courses aren't that bad, but Teatron sucked away my time.

I got no sleep last night, because I went to bed at 4, despite being done talking to Ari at 2. Let's just say that Hebrew is a bitch. She didn't even check my homework!!!! I was late because no one was at the table until 11:10, so she might have gone over the homework then, but if I'm getting carpel tunnel [spelling?] I should have a good reason for it. Like knitting.

On my way up to Middle East in the 20th Century, I was in the slow, slow elevator with Zach, a CJC-ite. I asked if he had done the reading yet. He said no. I said that I hadn't either [napping in Hillel takes priority, as do late night conversations with people]. Of course, our teacher was in the elevator with us! At least nothing is close to being due yet...

Sitting next to Josh in class is interesting. *And I know you're going to read this sooner or later, Josh* He's like a cat. If you give him a ball of yarn or a knitted scarf or something, he'll ignore it, but if you're knitting, he'll play with it as you're trying to work.

I had more tabling this afternoon but we stopped a half hour early.

This time gave me enough time to go to Hillel, where I had to go anyways to drop things off. I asked the dining people if I could get ice cream even though lunch was over, and they let me help myself. The salad bar was still open and there was still pizza left, so I effectively had a free lunch [despite the adage...]

Then I got to go prop shopping with Julie, Jo, Sarah, and Lisa. I got the sewing machine!

Now I'm in Hillel again. Bethany got pretty yarn and crochet hooks and taught me how to do kippot. I'll be making them for all my Jewish guy friends, and my Reform or Conservative female friends that wear kippot. And myself. It takes more time than knitting, but it gives me some variety.

Someday in the distant future I'm davening with OCP and wearing my tallis and a kippah. And t'fillin [though I have none]. That will be fun.

*No, I'm not actually planning on doing this. I'm not crazy. Or contreversial*

I have teatron and links and dinner tonight, so I decided it was easier to just not leave. I better get something accomplished besides knitting/crocheting.

~Rachel
