I'm reading the Questionable Content archives right now, and this one made me smile.

Though why someone would need a *pair* of D12s is beyond me. He should have gotten her a set with a d4, d6, d8, d10, d percentile, d12, and d20.

Me too. Actually, I pretty much love everyone in the comic. Especially Pintsize. He's so cute and destructive!

Heh, yeah. :-) I think Hanners is my favorite of the bunch.

because d12s are the coolest dice ever, although sadly underutilized

If only I had attacks that used d12s. My healing spells use d8s and my fire spells usually use d6s. Other people have d12s for attack rolls, but I am not a fighter.

Maybe I should send you a d12 for a belated birthday present (considering I have near infinite dice now...)

naaa it's okay. i have my dice organized and proportioned to a very anal extent. don't want to disturb the ratios ;-)

When making an attack that uses d6's, you can use d12's to simulate d6 if that is more fun. Just divide by two! (round up)

There's no real use to that, unfortunately, since both are perfect in shape.

The bigger problem is that d10s and d100s are not- either the sides aren't identical or the angles aren't identical, or both (this is hard to detect on a d100, since it's shaped roughly like a golf ball, but it's still true). Only 4, 6, 8, 12, and 20 have both sides that are the same shape and size and the same angles all around.

The better question is - if you only have d6s and d2s, how do you simulate:
d12
d4
d10
d20
d100

add in d8, too

my answers...
d12: roll 1d2 and 1d6. If d2 = 2, add 6 to your d6 result.
d4: 2d2 - one black one white. if white d2 = 2, add 2 to the other die.
d8: 3d2 - one black one white one red. If white d2 = 2, add 2. if red d2 = 2, add 4.
d10: same as d12, but d2 adds 5 and a d6 roll of 6 gets rerolled
d100: roll 2 d10s as above. if the second d10 is 2, add 10. if 3, add 20... if 10, add 90.

d20: ????

Anything better than these?

I assume by d2 you mean a coin or something, right?

Better is when you use a d20 to simulate a d1. Basically you roll, and if it's anything besides a 1, reroll. :)

Ysah. These questions came up years ago when my brother and I were trying to play a game requiring a d8 or something and our only portable randomizers were d6s and coins.

This is why I always carry a d20 on me. And now there's the internet, which has dice rolling programs. (Though I prefer to roll real dice when I can.)
