Potluck?

This is in the same vein as my last post.

There's a Div School JSA (Jewish Student Association) potluck dinner tonight (6:30) that I was planning on attending. Besides the throat, I'm fine. But now I'm wondering whether or not I should go. I'd like to meet people, but if I'm supposed to be on complete vocal rest, it might not be such a good idea. I've also already acquired the plates and cups that I am supposed to bring.

Should I go?

*Edit* If I do go, I now have a sign:

Hi. I'm Rachel Adler
I lost my voice last night and am not speaking today in an effort to get in back before Yom Kippur. If you find my voice, let me know. Otherwise:
-I'm a 1st year MTS student
-I'm probably focusing on Religion in the Social Sciences. I'm studying religious archaeology, purity, and piety.
The easiest way to communicate with me would be to ask "yes" or "no" questions. Otherwise, I have a notepad. :)

Go for it!

You could write on a small notepad. Then people might pay extra attention to your thoughts because they would have to wait for them.

Or you could be faster, if less coherent, and sketch very rough fast pictures.

Or you could make up sign language as you go along. (I've done this with friends sometimes. It's easier than it sounds, depending on what exactly you're trying to say).

And if you get tired of being interesting and sociable, you can sit back and poeple-watch with a completely clear conscience!

I'm bringing a pencil and notepad if I go. I'm not sure I could people-watch, though, seeing as there will probably be at most 20 people there. It's kinda hard to people-watch with a crowd that small.

If I were you in your shoes, I wouldn't go.

Hmm. That's now 2 yesses (my roommate said yes) and one no.

did you ever see the buffy the vampire slayer episode where the whole town lost their voices?

i watched it, and the suggestion of laryngitis made me lose my voice. i have, in the past, resorted to mime-age.

I've actually never seen Buffy, believe it or not. Last year some of my friends got into watching it at 1am in the highrise, and by then I was already fast asleep in my building. And thus I was excluded from that. So I need to find someone who doesn't mind watching the series starting at the beginning, since I feel like Buffy viewing should be social.

Hee! Over here (Ireland) they're showing the whole thing, one episode per day, and they seem to go back to the beginning when it ends. Clearly this is fate telling me to watch it all.

And re your edit: you're an Ellen Jamesian! (Uh, random gratuitous John Irving reference. May not be the most coherent today. Sleep-deprived and moving house.)
