So today I went to the dining hall so Barry could teach me the new bug-checking techniques.

[livejournal.com profile] levana_b- It turns out that you only have to check a bit from each bag, see if it has bugs, and if it doesn't, reseal the bags. If it does, then you take the sieve thing and wash the leaves, but you don't need to check each one individually.

And [livejournal.com profile] superducky1- Broccoli needs to be cut up, and then checked like the lettuce is checked. And again, if there are no bugs, then you just seal up the bags.

And [livejournal.com profile] moss_raven and [livejournal.com profile] estherchaya, you can appreciate this: for strawberries the only thing we have to do in the Hillel kitchen is cut off the tops and wash them.

And there are chocolate chip cookies around, as usual. And I ate one. So hah, [livejournal.com profile] maric23! (Yes, I will continue to gloat about cookies until I get my camera, which was finally shipped today.)

You haven't had to check leaf by leaf in a while, it was always checking the water. Check on a case by case basis with the prior mash/Barry, as if there's a bad batch or two, then you'll have to do the whole thing.

Broccoli's been that way since before Pesach; that was the thing that everyone was supposed to attend last spring.

But I never got around to attending it (and yet they still let me be a head mash...)

I checked leaf by leaf at the end of last semester. And I've never done broccoli myself.

And I love that I'm annoying [livejournal.com profile] levana_b by out-mashing you, since none of my money is being spent on her.

Note (important if you get in good with Barry)-

The week after finals second semester (i.e. senior week) there are typically several catered meals that need to be mashed. I did them this year, and Barry had me paid $10/hour instead of $8.

In Israel, where they either don't use pesticides or use different ones, strawberries take like an hour to check. But here, the general consensus seems to be cut the tops off, wash, life is good. That's what the Star-K told me to do and I figured that was good enough.
