The FX9

The TZ1

I've narrowed it down to those 2. The cheapest TZ1 from non-sketchy-land is 274.00. The cheapest FX9 is 259.00. So both fall into my under 300$ and cheaper than my Pentax Optio category.

The FX9 doesn't seem to have noise problems (did you notice any, [livejournal.com profile] plus_c and [livejournal.com profile] platypuses? The TZ1 does after ISO 400, but still, not so bad.

The FX9 is tiny. The TZ1 is bigger, though still quite portable. Tinyness is, of course, a double-edged sword. First of all, I carried around even my ginormous Kodak camera (which I had for about 2 years) pretty much all the time. I forget what model the ginormous kodak was. Small is cute, but small is more loseable. Though either way I'll be quite paranoid when I take it out, so as not to repeat my previous mistakes.

The TZ1 has a bigger lens than the FX9.

The TZ1 has 10x zoom. Which is pretty zoomful.

The FX9 has 6.0 Megapixels. The TZ1 has 5.0

Both have image stabilizers.

And they both take similar batteries, though the FX9 takes 2 hours to fully charge and the TZ1 takes 3. Usually I don't let my cameras get too low in power. I recharge whenever I can.

The TZ1 also is a bit slow in uploading pictures. It also has a lenscap, wheras the FX9 doesn't need one.

Now I still haven't seen the TZ1, because it's only sold in remote regions of suburbia.

I have seen the FX9, thanks to [livejournal.com profile] plus_c and [livejournal.com profile] platypuses. (I gave them pizza in return, so it's all good.)

I know that it's unwise to get a camera without seeing it first, but both are good, and I'd be happy with either. Would it be unwise then, to go with the FX9 without having seen the TZ1? I'm still leaning towards the TZ1, but at this rate I'll never see it...

For the time being, I have a camera-phone, though I usually forget about the cameraness.
Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't. This is one of those times where it didn't work so well. This is the ring that my Grandmother gave me for my 21st birthday. It's currently in a bank vault somewhere (I mean, I know where, but you don't need to know...) Unfortunately I didn't have my real camera when I got the ring (No one warned me that I might need it!) So I used the phone.

And that's why I need a camera now.

and yeah, in re: your question, you're prolly better off getting a card and spare battery online.

k.

though i still don't know which camera i'm getting it for.

I'll be so much more productive once i've ordered it. i've pretty much wasted all of today thinking about it...

Not sure what you're talking about with noise, but my FX9 seems to be working great. If you want to see some pics that I took with it, check here (http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2371388/1:), and look at the first batch of pictures.

It's when the pictures get all blurry and pixely. Look at the review for the TZ1 that I linked to, where the guy compares 4 pictures at different levels. (And meanwhile they don't do that for the FX9, so I have no basis of comparison...)

Wow. Those are nice pictures. Though I think you're a little obsessed with the car :-p

Ok. this (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/0/02/Groundzero2002_cc.jpg) is a good example of noise...

OK, gotcha - I saw that all the time with my old Nikon - haven't seen it yet with the FX9.

I have some macro mode pics too, but not with me at work - ping me when I get home tonight.
