phone call
Apr. 21st, 2004 10:36 pmMy parents called to say goodbye before they go to Guatemala for a week. My dad asked an amusing question:
Dad: Rachel, can you dance with guys?
Me: What do you mean by dance? Do you mean guys and girls together? Do you mean touching?
Dad: Like waltzing or the Cha-cha
Me: Because so many people waltz at Penn
Dad: So are you allowed to dance with guys?
Me: It's not a matter of "allowed." Everyone does different things, because there are many different interpretations in the Talmud. For example, there was a Hillel formal, and some people went and danced with guys. Some people went and dance in front of guys, but didn't touch them so much. Some people didn't go at all. There are people who think that girls shouldn't even be seen by guys when dancing, and put a mechitza up.
Dad: So do you dance with guys?
Me: Not really...
Dad: Is it because you don't think you are supposed to?
Me: I just don't feel comfortable
Although all I said was true, I neglected to mention the real reason that I don't dance with guys anymore...being shomer nagiah.
I don't know if I'll ever tell them I'm shomer.
Jon, please don't tell them yet. I don't know how they'll deal.
