Are You Orthodox?
Feb. 9th, 2004 11:52 pmAs an addition to the last entry, there's something I've been thinking about a bit because it amuses me greatly.
At Maurene's, one of her friends who I hadn't met yet, either Jorge or Gianna, asked me if I was Orthodox. I laughed for quite a while.
This is the second time a non-Jew has asked me if I was Orthodox. It never happens with Jews. But you'd think if anyone was at Penn long enough they'd be able to tell. Maybe it's cause they see my shomer shabbatness. But still. I eat with non-Jews, and while I won't mix milk and meat, I'm in no way kosher.
Tonight before rehearsal I talked to Rabbi Savenor from the JTS. I told him about my Reform background and my journey towards a more traditional Judaism. When he was asking me how kosher I was or how often I prayed, it occured to me that maybe I'm not even at the level of observance of Conservative Judaism yet. Then again, they do have stricter standards for Rabbis than they have for normal Conservative Jews.
Maurene said she'd classify my as Conservative. But most of CJC [with the exception of Joey] thinks of me as a CJC wanna-be. Though now I'm a regular Torah reader there.
I finally told my mom Sunday night that I'm shomer Shabbat. I'm still not sure what she actually thinks of this. I guess she told Dad and Dad told Grandma, because Grandma was all proud of me.
Just wait till they want me to work Saturdays at Adler's again. A fun drama will certainly ensue.
