This seems to be the new contestant in Rachel's search for a secondary laptop for note taking. Cheap and light. (2lbs!!!!!)

Thoughts from you computer nerd folk?

is liiiiitle! I'm no computer nerd... but just for me I have issues typing on not-full-sized keyboards... but then again my finger spread is a lot bigger than yours, so that probably has something to do with it... Though for a just to take notes on computer, it's wicked reasonably priced :) My comp was like $800... but that was after a bunch of discounts... I think it was originally like $1100 or something...?

I'd be wary of the keyboard, but otherwise looks like a solid choice.

It has my vote, but mostly because it comes with Linux, which is cool. Skype for Linux doesn't have video working yet (as far as I know), so the webcam included is not useful for that, but you can record thing for youtube of whatnot.

Mac. Only a Mac.

The problem with macs is that they're expensive. This here is cheap and light. Find me a mac as cheap and as light as this here laptop and I might consider it.

You get what you pay for. Windows=spyware, crashes, freezing, Vista (yes, this is a HUGE reason not to get one) and....when you buy a PC you are supporting a convicted, illegal monopoly (both in the US and Europe).

How does your conscience feel about this?

This is a Linux machine. No windows involved.

How are you with Linux? I have been using Linux for many years and it still can be frustrating. What distro is it using?

I've actually never used it before. "This"= laptop in question that I'm thinking of buying. But the user interface on this one actually looks quite nice. They have a flash video preview on the website.

Is it a homegrown distro of linux? I don't really trust those. Go with something solid like Ububtu or Fedora or Mandrake.

From what I can find the included Linux distribution is based off of Xandros. It can probably be made to run Ubuntu or Fedora, but honestly, if it's shipping with it, I'd bet the customized Linux distro is ready enough for prime time.

I've been using Linux and Windows for years. I find Windows much more frustrating and a lot harder to troubleshoot. I have less experience with Macs, but I find troubleshooting them easier than Windows (might have to do with the BSD base :-) )

Oh, come on. You know you'd rather have one of these (http://www.laptopgiving.org/)

Apparently they're not that good. They have like no hard drive and no memory and stuff. Plus, this one is lighter.

Define "good"? :-p

Besides, you could use the same logic as Time calling the iPhone the invention of the year. Its shiny! Small harddrive, little memory, and OS designed specifically for that, should work fine for taking notes. And you can repower it by cranking it... and it should survive field conditions. (Come on, how cool of a field laptop would it be!)
