Common sense?

There is a stairwell in my building that I walk up and down several times a day. Much to my distress, there is an ever-increasing pile of trash at the bottom of the stairwell. We don't have a housekeeper or anyone who is paid to remove this trash. And we have a nice big dumpster right in the back of the building! It does not take much effort to carry your trash outside the building.

Part of me wants to clean it up, since it's bothering me, but the other part of me says that will only encourage them to continue putting their trash there.

Maybe I should put up an anonymous sign. "The stairwell is not a dumpster. Please take your trash outside."

Or you could knock on the doors of the other apartments and ask if the trash is thiers, and if so would they please clean it up?

Well there are over 20 apartments in my building, so it would take a while to do that. And that would be confrontational...
