I really don't.

I got on the train home from NYC this morning at 8:00ish, and couldn't find my phone. I realized then that I had left it in Penn station. Now that I reflect on it, it would have been better to get off the train (it hadn't actually left but it was about to) and grab the phone, because even if I had missed the train and had been late to rehearsal, it would have been better to at least have my phone. But no, that would be the intelligent thing to do. Then again, it could have been picked up by then anyways. This is New York. Or actually, maybe I lost it somewhere else besides my seat in the waiting area, so I wouldn't have been able to find it at all.

So I went down to Center City after rehearsal, to the Verizon store to get a new phone. Except that they're closed on Sundays.

So I went to Liberty Place and bought a watch, because for the past semester my cell phone had been functioning as my watch.

But even if I get a phone tomorrow, which may or may not be the case, seeing as it's MLK day tomorrow and the stores might be closed, I'm still screwed because I've lost everyone's number. It'll take forever to get them all back, even if I don't need a lot of them anymore. I have a lot of friends' numbers on it. Or had.

It's not fair. I really don't have the time for this. Or the patience. Or the sanity. I keep on losing things and it's not cool anymore (not that it ever was). I'm at one of the greatest universities in the country, and they're supposed to only let in intelligent people. And yet I keep on losing things. Expensive things.

Oh, I also don't have the money for this. How am I ever going to be financially independent if I'm this absent-minded/stupid/unlucky? How will I be able to afford to live if I can't keep track of my posessions?

Well, according to Mom, the phone insurance covers lost phones, but there's supposed to be a police report. Which I can't file, because I'm in Philly. But she's supposed to take care of it.

Oh yeah, I'm also supposed to have either my intro, or my essays, or more of the JWST paper (or all of the above) done by tonight/tomorrow. I don't know if stupidity counts as a good excuse for any of these being missing. "Sorry, Ben. I didn't have time to finish my work for this week because I lost my cell phone in New York." Or better yet, my application for Harvard Div will be late, due to my stupidity. I bet I'll be a shoe-in!

Oh, and if anyone wants to send me their cell phone number number (I guess assuming you're someone whose number I had in the first place, or if you want me to have your number now) my e-mail is theyellowhobbit[at]gmail[dot]com.

Now to spend the rest of the day curled up in a little ball on my bed, at least until SNL at 7:00

Sorry about the phone. I lost my palm pilot earlier this year and sucked it up and got a new one. A better one, so I could justify. It's one of those things - you just do it, and try not to beat yourself up about it.

Also sorry I missed you last night. I had been at my pulpit in NJ, and didn't turn my phone back on until too late. Bad timing with phones this weekend, I guess. Next time, though!

Except that I keep on doing it. Starting from the summer, my list:

-My digital camera
-My old watch
-My wallet
-(Not lost, but I had my airconditioner fall out of my 3rd story window, onto another roof. Luckily it was already broken. But still...)
-The phone (Plonit)

Plus countless times where I have misplaced or have forgotten things. I'm really bad at this.

And I'll let you know (beforehand) next time I'm in NYC.

Perhaps you could try psychoanalyzing yourself to find where you lost things. It often works.

That's not the point. These things would not be where I left them because someone else would have taken them. The digital camera, for example, was in Israel, somewhere between Dor and Safi. The wallet I knew I left in the cab, and luckily I got that one back. The old watch is also probably in Israel. It's not like I can just go and get it.

The point is that I don't have things when I need them. It's causing me to waste all the time that I don't have.

hey... did you try calling it to see if someone had picked it up?

Yes. No luck.

Try calling the lost and found - both Penn Station and either NJ Transit or Amtrak - depending on which one you rode home on. One of my other friends recently left her phone at 30th st. station (at the *start* of her trip, not at the end, like you) and she was able to get it back because they had it in lost and found. So it is definitely worth a try.

Also, if you can't find it at all, you may need to get a new cell number.

Oh, and great to see you this past shabbat!

I think they'll just deactivate the phone when I get the new one. I did try lost and found, but no one picked up. I've already put in the claim, so I'll have a new one on Tuesday, but that still leaves me phoneless tonight and tomorrow, and numberless until I get numbers...

ick.

But check online for the hours of the two lost and founds. I know the Penn Station one has specific (daytime) hours - and it may have turned up. You never know.

Everyone loses things. Do the best you can to keep track of stuff, try to improve on this skill and don't drive yourself nuts when you err.

I keep a mental checklist of stuff I have with me, and try to check it before I change locations, e.g. getting on/off trains. If it makes you feel better, there are some items that I am simply less able to remember and/or not break. I have been through more umbrellas that I care to count. I've lost a wallet. I've lost a phone. I've lost nice gloves. I've lost the warmest mittens I ever owned. I even lost a set of tefillin.
