The theme of this Rosh Hashana was "Rachel mashing so Barry can go to services." It played itself out quite a bit.
Friday night I mashed from 6:30-7:30. Services were only an hour long. Then we went to R. Mordy and Limor's house.
The food was amazing, and it was a lot of fun. I think there were about 20 people there. They have a big dining room.
And they're really surprisingly non-judgemental about the whole egal thing. I wasn't the only non-Orthodox person there (for example
Dinner ended around 11 and I went to sleep around 11:30ish
I actually set my alarm for 7:45, so I would have plenty of time to go over psukei and the Torah reading.
I got to Hillel right before 9. And then I led psukei, which was mostly uneventful except that I apparently rushed the whole thing (there were all these people in the back coughing, and I assumed that meant that they all wanted to get psukei done as quickly as possible.) I also didn't realize that I was the one who would be doing kaddish D' Rabbanan (usually someone else does it, but no one started it, so I jumped in.) Unfortunately I don't know it that well, never having had to say it myself. I only realized after the fact that right next to the Hebrew text was a transliteration. And I found out that there was someone else who was going to do it, but I apparently started right away. But it seemed like forever...
And my Torah reading was shiny with the shiny
Then I went down to the kitchen to mash again so Barry could daven.
I made a lunch. It was really fun, and there were 12 people I think so it was nice and small, but not too tiny. Or nice and big but not too ginormous, depending on your point of view. And as usual everyone loved my deli-roll. How could you not love my deli-roll?
Then I took a nap, since R.G. (that's the problem with initials- multiple people with the same ones. Ok. RG from Swathmore.) volunteered to take my 4-5 shift. And I.B. was doing 5-end of davening. So I skipped davening to read and talk to people, and I didn't have to mash. Huzzah!
Saturday dinner was at L.D.'s, with her whole family there. There were almost 30 people at the meal. I made a lasagna, with no nutritional value whatsoever. (No vegetables were hurt in the making of this lasagna.) Ok, fine- it had some nutritional value I suppose. But the main point is that it was all cheese and no vegetables besides whatever was in the tomato sauce. I probably could have put in more spices, but they weren't my spices. And I accidentally dairyfied the spices. Hopefully 408 will forgive me for that. (Do you guys forgive me?)
Sleep was long in coming. I got home at 11:30 and thought "look at all the sleep I'll get!" And then I couldn't fall asleep. It was too hot, and the people outside were really loud. They were playing "love shack" and "I love rock and roll" and "Time warp" and singing along really loudly and badly. Now I like love shack and time warp (and I used to like "I love rock and roll" until they played it 100 times the day they were filming the coke commercial on the beach of nahsholim when we were digging at Dor) but I also like sleep. Maybe I had too much caffeine. Usually even noise isn't enough to keep me awake.
And of course, I had a strange dream where A.B. wanted to walk me and
I did psukei again. I corrected the mistakes from yesterday, and managed to make new ones in their place. Not like I didn't know what I was doing, but again it was nerves or tiredness or something.
And then I stayed at shacharit until 10 and went to mash. I was there for 3 hours. And I was very tired. But there were unlimited supplies of chocolate chip cookies, which helped me stay mostly awake.
Lunch was at L.L. and S.G.'s and was very good, though there was this little girl (a sibling of 2 of the students here) who was so hyper and talkative and annoying. She looked like Olive from "Little Miss Sunshine" (If you ahven't seen it go see it now) but I would have much preferred to have Olive at lunch.
L.L. had forgot to put my deli-rolls on the blech, so she put one on and put the other on while the first one was being served. And we ended up not eating the 2nd cause there was plenty of food. Which means leftover deli roll for me! Yay! It would be lunch tomorrow except for the whole fast day thing. Gah. Stupid fast.
Then I went home and napped, and realized that Tashlit would be cancelled because of the rain. I actually made it to Ma'ariv, and saved the day by finding grape juice in the fridge. B.G. gave me 10 points! She never told me what I could do with them, though.
And that's it. Now I have tons of work to do for my meeting with Ben tomorrow. I'm gonna grab a caramel frappuchino so I don't crash right now.
