belated update
Aug. 15th, 2006 11:28 amSo this past Shabbat I was at
tobeginagain's, since I was staying there anyways. She made a really nice Shabbat dinner, despite the dairyness of it.
alanscottevil was there, among others. There were like 18 people total or something insane!
So someone there asked if I was part Sephardi, and I said, "no, why would you think that?" "Because you're so dark," he said. "That's because I've been doing archaeology for the past 6 weeks." "Oh yeah." (Since I had told everyone in the name game that I was doing archaeology.) So apparently I'm Sephardi looking now.
Friday night services were at Yedidya, and there were 2 noteable things: 1. at the end, a little girl did Yigdal. That made me so happy, knowing that some Orthodox shuls do that. 2. Jay, the achitect who visits all the archaeological sites in Israel and makes pretty drawings of them, was there.
And then on Saturday I was at Kedem, and I got the 3rd aliyah, which means I was the first person Harry thought of who was a non-kohen/levy to get an aliyah when he was giving them out. So that makes up for not being able to lead or lein, plus I didn't have to do any work.
Lunch was this huge picnic in the park. We were in the shade, so the heat wasn't too bad. And I had trouble finding the bubbler/drinking fountain/water fountain at first, and felt rather silly.
I got to take a nice nap, and then there was se'udah shlisheet at J.B.'s house. Basically it was me, A.G., and a bunch of gay guys who had all met at pride. And J.B.'s roommate has 2 cats, and the one that isn't supposed to like people likes me (as is normally the case with cats.)
Saturday night I was boring and I packed and I went to bed early so I could wake up for Qumran. And I already wrote about that.

As for the flight, it wasn't too bad, though I wish I had been able to sleep more. I read a really good book called "East" by Edith Pattou. Unfortunately I finished it with 4 hours left of the flight. I had a Terry Pratchett book, so it wasn't such a big deal. And I watched part of Ice Age.
Being home is weird. I already miss Israel.
I'm still worried about the whole having to make money at some point thing. But apparently there's more money left in my college fund than I thought. Enough to live off of for a while. Of course, I'll still need to get a part time job while I'm in grad school, and I don't know how hireable I am. Maybe one of the American semester programs could hire me to teach Jewish history or something. I would love to work for EIE.
