I was eating dinner at a nice italian place with A.G., my lovely Tu B'Av (ok, so we were a day late...) And at the end I took the napkin off my lap and placed it on the table.

And I placed it a bit too close to the candle. And the napkin caught fire.

And I tried pouring water on it and it didn't help and then I pushed it to the floor and stomped on it, and the manager came over and yelled at me for not calling him over. Um, I didn't know you existed, sir, and last time I checked, the first natural reaction to seeing a fire is to try to put it out. You don't think about thinks rationally.

I felt like a failure at life. But A.G. bought me a giant ice cream.

No two people are not on fire. (See the strong bad e-mail called "children's book")

setting things on fire (ok as long as no loss of life or limb ensues) does NOT equal failure, it is FUN!!!!

Hehehehe, my sister put a glass measuring cup on the stove, lit it on fire, and then walked away from the room saying calmly and casually, "Marnee, I think there's something in the kitchen you should see." Just bloody well ignored it. And then later on in life she went on to lighting tissues and putting them in trash cans and forgetting about them in her curiosity with fire... in conclusion, you shouldn't feel bad.

I think the manager was just upset that he missed out a chance to act the hero. Oh, and that he didn't get to act according to his handbook, which is of course what all managers are about. Anyway, the way you told the story is incredibly cute.

He probably was annoyed at me spilling water everywhere. And breaking the cheap glass candle-holder. And disturbing the peace of the other customers. But what would have happened if I had just called him and he took a while to get over and the fire spread?
