In which Rachel gets hit by a bike
Jun. 15th, 2006 10:10 pmAround 6pm,
son_of_paladin signed on IM. I asked him what he was doing tonight, and he was doing nothing. I had been feeling restless and wanted to get some exercise. At first I thought of walking to his place, but then we decided to walk on the bike path to Del's Lemonade.
techiemikey was also online, and
son_of_paladin asked him along as well. We would meet at my place and depart from there. Sounds like a good idea, right?
Good idea, bad idea.
Good idea: walking with a group of friends to get frozen lemonade
Bad idea: walking back from said frozen lemonade and getting hit by a biker.
Yes, Rachel "the biking hobbit" Adler got hit by a biker.
The way the bike path works is that are two sides. You bike on the right, you walk on the left. That way walkers will see oncoming bikers.
I was on the left.
techiemikey and
son_of_paladin were walking side by side with me, so we took up most of the path. But this biker, zooming at the speed of light, yells "on your left!" But I didn't really have time to think and I went to the left [maybe I was trying to get completely off the path, I'm not sure] and he hit me. According to
techiemikey and
son_of_paladin, he was going at top speed, and he didn't try to brake or slow down, he just was going to zoom pass. Because stopping would be inconvenient. Because hitting me wasn't inconvenient?
I fell, I badly scraped both knees, my left knee is bruised, my right elbow has a small scrape, and my left shoulder hurts when I move it too much. Hey,
cynara_linnaea, does this mean I'm your mom?
On the plus side, I'm fine now, though things still hurt [I'm in good enough condition to go pick up mom from the airport in a bit]. And I pwned his bike. Yeah. Pwned. His front wheel was like totally dented. And according to
techiemikey and
son_of_paladin, he went flying.
He was lecturing me about how "on your left" means "on your left" but he was totally at fault. When I bike and want to pass by pedestrians, I slow down and wait for them to get out of the way. As a biker, I try to be nice to bikers when I'm a pedestrian, but in this case I just couldn't react in time. And he really should have slowed down.
My dad thought I should have gotten his info and
techiemikey and
son_of_paladin said I should run over his bike. Yeah, how do you like that? On your left!
Ok, I shouldn't be vengeful. And I'm not really, because I'll never see this guy again. I'm not so much angry at getting hurt as I am at the fact that he didn't slow down and he thought it was my fault. Dude, there's a reason you're supposed to bike in the right lane.
**Edit: I forgot to say: the biker was fine. He was worried about some electronic gadget, which also was fine.**
