Dec. 16th, 2007
Once upon a time I was shomeret nagiah, which meant that I didn't touch boys. During this time, touch became something very alien from me, since I was no longer regularly hugging or getting back massages from the guys who I used to touch. There was also a period of time where I had to actively dodge attempted hugs from guys who didn't know that I couldn't touch them.
It got to the point where any time someone tapped me from outside of my sight, I would be startled. Most of the time the person tapping me was female, but I had no way of knowing this until I spun around. And when I get startled, I often make high-pitched noises, such as "meep!" It's an automatic reaction.
I was shomeret nagiah for about 1.5-2 years, and I've since given it up and have been no longer shomeret since early my junior year. So I've been post-shomeret longer than I was shomeret for.
Still, I have shomeret-reflexes in which I get startled when someone touches me unexpectedly. I ended up startling a friend (KC from div school, as opposed to HRSFA KC. People need to stop having the same initials! Ok, from now on we have dsKC and hKC.) today when we were studying German and we were using my laptop and wireless mouse and he said he had a friend who had a wireless mouse, and when he first got it, he would roll it on people (since you can do that with a wireless mouse and still have it work). So then dsKC demonstrated on me except my shomeret reaction kicked in and I meeped and startled him and felt very bad about it.
Also today we discussed Rachel's law of falling:
If Rachel is falling but catches herself, she will make some sort of high-pitched meeping noise.
If Rachel is falling and doesn't catch herself, she will swear.
Rachel doesn't really know at the time she's falling whether or not she'll actually fall, so it happens involuntarily. But when she discovered it a couple of years ago, it was pretty cool.
And a to do list:
E-mail Dr. Machinist about the final and stuff.
E-mail Prof. Cohen about meeting before class for the paper
Do research for the [formerly] Top Secret Project
Finish other top-secret project
Find a place for this Shabbat
Find a place for next Shabbat (in Jerusalem)
And things I should do, but are less urgent:
Work on Machinist paper
Work on Cohen paper
Study for finals
Curl up into a hobbity ball when this becomes overwhelming
Finish the shawl
