knittingness )

I made the hat with this: http://store.knitting-warehouse.com/073425.html
It's so much fun to use! and the hat only took 2 days to make!

I'm on a knitting spree. Try and stop me now. I dare you.

I put the pattern online.

shiny )

basically what you do is start at the center of the kippah after a few rows.

now start the first pattern you want to use, starting from the upper left-hand corner. you might want to have 2 vines going, so the kippah has more color. where there's no pattern just do the base color. so 1 row of mine might have a silver, black, silver, purple and the rest black

once you get to the end of a pattern, start the next one on the next row. the vine from the lower right corner connects to the next upper left hand corner. start it right underneath and diagonally to the right. in this way, there's no break.

if you want to add stitches, it's easy. i usually do it in the blank areas between vines and leaves. the only thing is when you get to a long stretch of vine connecting 2 branches, add the stitches there as well [not doubling, but doing as many as it takes to connect what should be connected.] basically this involves a lot of paying attention to the rows above the one you're working on, and counting stitches so you know where to change colors.

wow. these directions are confusing. good luck trying to make this!

+ I finally got my Spirit & Law grade
- It was a B+, putting me periolously at a 3.53
+ I still have a 3.68 in the major, and a 4.0 in the other major. So I'm still fine for honors-land, provided I figure out a thesis topic at some point this semester.
+ I also could be getting a good grade from Ruderman... I hope.

So I didn't accomplish much over break, but if I finish up the 2 applications for the digs [Bar Ilan and Hebrew U (Tel-Dor). Hebrew U is my 1st choice, since I figured out all the Jewish stuff will be ok] I'll have done something tangible to reduce my workload for the beginning of next semester.

The knitting actually did help as well, since the scarf for the day school had a deadline. Granted, the event isn't until March, but the sooner I get them done, the better. Now at least the 1st one can be in the program for the raffle. There's no way I can knit scarf #2 today. It's big, blue, and fuzzy; the usual fuzzy scarf I make. If only I could knit on Shabbat! Maybe I'll finish it Saturday night, and then my mom or dad can bring it to Mrs. Felder.

I'm so scared that this semester will be stressful. I have the 5 class thing. Maybe I will audit Monge, since I'm so divided and I really do want to take her class, but not be overworked or under-shabbated. But then again, if I audit, I'm spending hours of my time doing somethign that won't reduce a future workload at all. Kind of like pass/failing, though at least that gets me a credit. I need to stop by her office next week.

I'm also afraid that costumes will be over my head. Hopefully people will have some useful clothes in their own closets. And hopefully I can get the rest in 1 giant shopping trip. And hopefully they don't have too many costume changes. Though I'm sure Andrew Janet's character must have a billion costumes. Gah! Why did you have to pick a play with so few girl's parts, and so many guy's parts?!?!?!

That little bit of anxiety is trickling in, creeping up on me for no apparent reason. I can't do anything now besides finish the application.

Well I could start on anth readings, since they're online.

I looked at the syllabus for ANTH 170, Primate behavior, and found this:

"For the second assignment we will go to the Philadelphia Zoo on a Saturday morning sometime in March or April. The details of this assignment will be provided later."

Wonderful. So I already have to explain to the professor on the first day of class that I won't be able to go to the zoo with the class. Unless they chose a Sunday instead. I hope he will understand the Jewish thing, and won't be like "what if a non-Jew drove?" I suppose I could walk to the zoo, though that would take a long time, and go out of the eruv, and my guess is that the zoo isn't free, which makes it impossible.

Maybe I should drop both 170 and Monge for something else. I could take a class that Professor Urban is teaching. Whee! Urban! Or I could take Jokes and Insults (anth 125) which is on Tuesdays and thursdays 12-1:30. No conflicts there, and it is an 100-level class in cultural anthropology. [Penn in Touch says that it's full, but maybe I can get in anyways.] Or Bible in translation with Tigay. Or Human reproduction. I guess I'll sit in on everything this week, and decide from there.

Which will mean that week 1 of classes will be INSANE!

Last night I went to my Grandma's house for dinner. Of course, in typical Grandma fashion, I had told her on the phone that I don't really like applesauce. But then at her house, she said
dialogue that doesn't necessarily make sense )
And so on.

She can't have it both ways. She can't want me to be thin, and push all this food on me and complain that I won't eat enough. I'm sorry, I don't have super fast metabolism. In order for me to look the way you'd like to, I have to eat less than you want to serve me. If I were to eat as much as you'd like me to, I'd gain weight. Make up your mind!

Not that I'd say that out loud. *sigh*

Pride and Prejudice was realy good. The guy who plays Darcy was soooo hot! *swoon!*

I decided that Darcy is an engineer. Just look at the scene where he comes in, stands in front of Elizabeth, staring at her for 5 minutes, and awkwardly runs out, having said very little at all. Totally engineer.

[livejournal.com profile] kressel, did you ever finish that fanfic?

And just to screw up the chronology:

When I came in, Grandma told me she had a surprise for me.

In her room, on her desk, was a small Jewelry box. And inside it was a ring.

It was oval shaped, with 4 medium-ish diamonds surrounded by shiny silver and smaller pieces of diamond [I think] stones. I asked, and yes they're real. Apparently it was my great grandmother's "dinner ring." So Grandma saved it for me for my 21st birthday, even though that's not for another 2 months.

She said I could use it however I want. So if I were to get engaged and my fiance couldn't afford a ring, we could get this one re-set to make it look engagementy, and I'd have a ring. Or I can just keep it in the safe-deposit box at the bank, where it sits now, in case there comes a time (chas v'shalom) where I would have to sell it. Or I could wear it for dinner parties or something. There isn't so much this ring could be worn for as it is now, because it's too nice for anything I ever attend. I'd have to be invited to a ball or something.

Part of me thinks that even if my future husband, whoever he will be, could afford a ring, it would be better to use this one, and save the 3,000-10,000$ he would spend on it for something more useful, like buying a house. I'm not so big into giant expensive weddings, but one thing I would never part with is having an engagement ring, because I've always wanted to be able to wear one. I find them so beautiful. But I have no problems with having a cheap but valueable ring. Maybe I could use one or two diamonds, make the rest into a pendant, and surround the ring diamonds with another stone, like emeralds, which are far less expensive. The possibilties are endless.

All of this requires getting engaged, which I'm nowhere near doing.
