For great reading
Feb. 27th, 2005 03:26 amI just finished reading what Jessica [
jtersesk] sent me of the novel she's writing. It's really really good. It's about a young woman's journey in becoming Orthodox. It's really really good. And I stayed up until now to read it. Silly Hobbit.
I'm inspired to try to write my own ba'al teshuva novel, except I'm going to make mine non-fiction. I'm not sure if my life is interesting enough...Jessica says it is, and that there's a market for this genre. Right now the only really good ba'al teshiva book she knows of is "Black Becomes a Rainbow" and that's sadly out of print [but I managed to find a copy for my mom, and now she and dad have read it, and i think they're giving it to cousin lisa and my grandparents to read, too. i've only read up to page 74 cause i was too busy doing my 2 papers over break.]
As far as I know, Jessica is right. I mean there are books for ba'alei teshuva on becoming frum and stuff, but no good novels...or maybe there are and we just haven't found them.
But in any case, I think I'm going to write my story. Maybe I can use excerpts from my lj or something, though that's not so novel-esque [though mine will be non-fiction i still want it to read like a novel]. I also would go back to before I was journaling, and talk about NFTY and stuff, and how I was so certain I wanted to be a Reform Rabbi, and how NFTY made me love Judaism.
I should probably go to sleep. just look at all my typos! and I have to be awake tomorrow for the wedding! and be able to dance!
