So tonight OCP sponsored a SoulFarm concert. SoulFarm is an Orthodox[?] band. They play a lot of cool jewish music, much like what Reform Jewish rock people do, like Noam Katz or Rick Recht, though they stick to tunes we know and just arrange them in cool ways. They even have an electric-accoustic madolin!

So the thing was that there was a mechitza. I knew there wouldn't be mixed dancing, but I don't know, I didn't expect the mechitza. I guess I figured it would be one of those concerts where people sat. As it turned out there was a lot of dancing.

To some extent I could be a lot less inhibited, because the guys pretty much couldn't see me, unless they actually tried. So I wasn't dancing for anyone, except myself. That's a good thing. But still it was hard for me to let loose at the beginning.

I definitely like the freedom a mechitza gives. I don't have to worry about slow dances, when everyone pairs off and I might be left alone, or people grinding during a fast song, and me being like "I don't wanna do that." Last year at Mythos it was easy enough. Then came the Hillel formal, about a week before I was officially shomer, and there I was barely dancing with guys, though I was still okay dancing in front of them.

I suppose I'm still ok with guys seeing me dance, if it's just a group of girls going around in a circle. Like when we danced when Yoni and Gabrielle got engaged. But it's not liked we're dancing for the guys. we're dancing for ourselves and there happens to be no mechtiza. Guys might take pictures [like Reuven, who I'm sure will eventually read this entry. What are you going to do with only 2 classes besides read my livejournal and the newsgroup?] and actually I did say something to Reuven about how wasn't the mechitza set up so guys couldn't see us and wouldn't he be defeating the purpose by taking pictures, but I didn't really care.
