Commentary is in blue.
Rachel, I understand your quandary here and you can certainly have an extension till Thursday morning in section if this will help you out. Yes, it most certainly will. yay! Here's what I would recommend. Yes, all of the terminology you mention is important to an understanding of Judaism, but is it essential to your explanation of the occupation? I would define only those terms which you specifically end up using in your discussion of the occupation of a rabbi.  i think i need most of my explanations, i can take out the kashrut thing...as the e-mail goes on, it's clear that Teagan knows quite a bit about Judaism, so it's less necessary to explain everything, even if ideally a paper should be understanable to anyone...You should certainly have a background section at the beginning talking about the individual whom you interviewed and explaining their occupation, but you needn't get so broad as talking about the whole Jewish culture, this is something I would bring in for the conclusion.
The main point of this assignment, as far as I'm concerned, is to have you recognize that there is a degree of learning which is a necessary component of every occupation.well i think i recognize that!!! Think about our main definition of culture from class. How does learning play into the notion of the transmission of culture? Culture is learned, so then, how is this process of learning accomplished if we look at real people's lives? On the surface this could be confusing if you compare it to the notion of what Jewish culture is amongst the Jewish community, but then you have to remember that there are clearly different perceptions of what a particular subculture entails (e.g. how some people would consider Hasidic Jews to be the only "real" Jews). So, you can bring up different ways in which people practice their Jewishness, but the main point is to understand how the individual you interviewed acquired the skills they need for the job they have and to relate this both to culture and society (the interaction of individuals). but that's the whole problem! Rabbi Mike didn't learn all of his rabbiness from rabbi school... why oh why couldn't i have chosen someone who grew up in the culture? Let me know in class if you need to talk about this more, oh i definitely do...I hope this helps a bit.
I would say that you should most definitely try to keep the paper less than 10 pages in your revising of it for tomorrow,  eep if you decide you need to make some changes. Think about what are the most important parts of your analysis, and don't put everything you know in the paper, that's not the point. See you in class. Teagan

I think I'm gonna print it out and talk to her either before or after anthro now. and then make the edits this afternoon. i have nothing else due except reading for recitation.
