Walking out of Hillel I slipped on the ice and fell. I'm fine, but my lower back hurts a lot, when I sit, when I stand, when I bend over... bringing out the recycling was an endeavor filled with profanity.

I'm hoping that sitting on a heating pad will make me feel better. Also, I'm going to drink a nice cup of tea.

Ice it for the first 48 hour. Heat will only increase the inflammation. After 48 hours then you can heat. Ibuprofen help a lot, also.

Feel better! If it is still bothering you today, it can't hurt to stop by UHS--it is free (after all that tuition...), after all.

I concur. Just like when you get out your wisdom teeth! Icing it will reduce the inflammation and pain - 20 mins on, 20 mins off. Then switch to heat later to clean out the area of anything unsavory that may have collected during the icing period. Def the ibuprofen as well, especially if it's muscular (ibuprofen is more of a muscle relaxant, while acetaminophen and other NSAIDs are anti-inflammatory/blood thinners).

The bad news: I fell on my tailbone last summer and it took about 8 weeks to feel entirely better. My mom, who has also taken similar falls, concurs.

The good news: If it the pain does not go away immediately, it does not mean that you are irreparably injured. Don't freak out.
