I finished Shlomo's kippah today, finally. It was actually pretty easy to do, since Hebrew letters don't require so many changes of color, especially when they are block letters. And if you do them enough you start to memorize the patterns.

It says "ח חי חיי חיים מבריסק" which is a parody of the "נ נח נחמ נחמן..." kippot. I think it's pretty shiny.

From kippah

And I think I'll have to put a limit on my commisions for now, beyond those that have already been commissioned. Coming up next: finishing [livejournal.com profile] kellev's kippah, which is about 7 lines from done!

In other news, National Geographic is doing a special on "In Search of the Lost Ark." Oh, silly National Geographic. At least they had the common sense to not use the modern Hebrew alphabet in the depiction of the 10 commandments.

Yes, archaeology really is Indiana Jones. Except with patiches instead of whips.

that's hilarious! and well-knit, too.

I think I might want to read your thesis at some point. I'm interested in your topic and know less about it than a rabbinical student should. And I remember the torture of writing my thesis at Penn.

hag sameach!

Which thesis? The anthro one or the Jewish studies one?

Who was your thesis advisor?

Oh, that's RIGHT - you're doing THESES!!!! hee hee hee hee.

Well, I'm new here, so you'll have to remind me which is which - as in, which posts go to which of your theesees. Hee hee. :o)

I wrote my thesis in the history dept (although it should've been a polisci paper, but never mind), and my advisor was Dr. Lynn Hunt, who is now at UCLA. NO ONE wanted to be my reader for a modern israeli politics paper - Ian Lustig wouldn't do it because it was a "history" paper and he did "polisci," grr.... So Palestinian professor Bashara Doumani was my reader. He said my paper was biased.

Did I tell you my paper was on modern popular opinions and the changing presentation of history of the Golan Heights? It was called "Politicized History: Israeli Popular Opinion on the Golan Heights." Uh... it was a theses ABOUT bias!!!!
Anyway.

Anything mentioning Ben is the anthro thesis. I really like the anthro one. It's on the archaeology of purity and ritual bathing. The Jewish studies is less cool, but still cool. It's on modern miqvah practices in the libreal movements of Judaism.

UGH. That sucks about your thesis readers or lack thereof.

That's Brisk, Baby! (?)

R' Hhayim of Brisk was the founder of the Brisker style of Talmudic analysis and ancestor of the Soloveitchik family.

This is totally marketable. Quick get your business-sense on top of it. I picture a whole line of "Na Nach..."-parody kippahs.

Ch cha chai chaiyim mibrisk
M Mena Menach Menachem Mendel milubavitch
Y Yo Yose Yosef Dov miboston
R Riv Rivk Rivka micharan
M Mo Mosh Mosheh mimitzrayim
M Mat Matit Matitya Matityah Matityahu mimodiin

A Av Avra Avraha Avraham Shemaya mibrooklyn

Some of those are going to take big kippot to fit all of the letters.

I don't do lines of kippot, though. They take long enough as it is, so I only make them on request...

Are in the market for an Avraham Shemaya miBrooklyn kippah? (That would be amusing to crochet)

Awesome.

I am highly amused. And it's nice work, too :)
