Back to school, of sorts
Sep. 3rd, 2007 01:45 pmMy Harvard Div orientation starts September 10th, and my classes start September 17th. This gives me a week beforehand to explore Cambridge and to gloat to everyone who actually is in school about how the Div school is made of awesome.
So what did I do this morning?
currentlee,
adlight, MF, and I all went berry picking.
I have not been berry picking in many, many years. I can't remember when the last time was. It was at least 4 years ago, since I never went in college. Perhaps it was even 8 years ago, since I'm not sure that I ever went in high school.
We started out with the raspberries. There was a plethora of raspberries that were ripe enough to be picked. We each got a quart box. (So that's 3 quarts we have in the house, some of which will be made into jam and some of which will be eaten, or frozen and eventually turned into smoothies.)
Then we went apple and nectarine picking. We got courtland, gala, ginger-gold, and shamrock apples, in that order, and that's also descending order of how many we got of each (actually, maybe we didn't get that many galas). The courtlands are good for baking, and
currentlee wants to make apple desserts. The galas must be good for something, but I forget what. The shamrocks are like granny smiths, though a bit sweeter and granier.
I was a bit wary about the ginger-golds. I hear "gold" and I think "golden delicious." I hate the "delicious" apples. (Golden delicious apples are neither golden nor delicious. Discuss.) They are too grainy for me. They don't taste like real apples. So if it's a choice between a delicious apple and no apple, I'll go for no apple.
However, ginger-golds have nothing to do with the delicious family of apple. I tried a small one because I was curious to see what they tasted like. They are perfection in an apple! They are everything an apple should be. If the Tree of Knowledge was actually an apple tree (which it couldn't have been since apples are a New World fruit and are not native to Mesopotamia) it would have been a ginger-gold tree.
We had only gotten 3, but we had some room at the end for a few more fruits so I ran and got 3 more while
adlight and MF got more nectarines. And by 3 I mean 4, since I also got one to eat then. But I haven't eaten it yet. :)
And also the farm is really cool about you eating the fruit while you pick. So I didn't have to feel guilty about sampling these beautiful apples. Did I mention they were amazing?
I don't remember the name of the farm, but
adlight or
currentlee could tell you. If you're in the area and want to go fruit picking I would highly recommend this farm.
I think is the start of a year of healthy eating. And there's a really good deal for gym membership right now, so I'm probably going to join the local gym. And the weather is still nice enough to bike in. So yay!
