Once upon a time, there was a girl in my class who had everything- she was smart, pretty, thin, popular, athletic, etc.

I just looked her up on facebook, and she's going to Georgetown.

**Edit. Yes, I know, Georgetown is also a prestigous university, and prestige isn't everything. It's more like an "I beat her" for the one time in my life. Even if I only beat her by a tiny tiny bit. She beat me at everything else. Everything. She probably didn't even see it as a competition, she just had everything. She probably still does. Then again, for all I know she could be mierable at school. I doubt it.**

The only thing Ivy-league means is that you are paying more money for the same education as everybody else.

well except that Georgetown costs about the same as UPenn. All private universities in the US do. In fact, I think BU is more expensive than any of the Ivy leagues, as is NYU.

Georgetown and Penn are both schools where the quality of one's education is a function of one's effort, not the quality of the institution.

Are there really such big differences between private universities and colleges in the US? [I assume that this is true to the private-state relation]
Do you get better jobs when your CV contains Ivy-league unies? o_o
[For example in Gilmore Girls there was this huge fuss over unies, too. Is it really that important? What are the determining factors and qualities in this case?] There was this scholarship to Brown from my highschool, but noone getting it used it to study, but to work and buy a flat or a car upon returning...
[To make a fake excuse for my uneducatedness, here you have only minor differences]

Depending on the program, Georgetown is just as competetive to get into as any of the Ivys. I got into some Ivys, but not into Georgetown. I didn't go to any of them, though.

Or even moreso, depending on what you're doing. Gtown Foreign Service School (including the undergrad section) is probably the best in the country in that area. I wouldn't really say that Georgetown is bad in any way; it's a phenominal school for areas like foreign and diplomatic service, and other stuff too.

As for miou_vicioso's question- not particularly, especially if you're looking at working at a financial firm or something like that. Grad school, on the other hand, does matter greatly.

Precisely.

People tend to forget that Ivys are not the only good schools out there. In fact, in a lot of cases, they're not the best schools for certain programs. Ivys are definitely good schools, but they are certainly not the only prestigious schools.

i have no clue what program she's in. Maybe she is in a better program. Though you can't really compare say polysci at one place and archaeology at another. I'm sure she's doing something that is very very hard.
